Purpose
The frequency starting device (hereinafter PCHPS) is designed for frequency starting of synchronous electric motors with voltage ratings of 6 and 10 kV and power ranging from 1 to 10 MW, used in mechanisms with fan-type load characteristics, as well as in mechanisms with heavy starting conditions (for example, ball mill drives). By special order, PCHPS units can be manufactured for higher power ratings of 10 to 40 MW. PCHPS is a frequency converter whose power circuit is optimized for intermittent short-time duty, with modified protection and control functions.
The use of PCHPS is justified in cases where implementation of soft starters based on thyristor voltage regulators is not possible, and the use of full-featured frequency converters is restricted due to economic considerations or excessively large physical dimensions.
Applications of PCHPS:
- In regions with limited power capacity in electrical energy systems.
- Starting of drives based on high-voltage synchronous motors with fan-type load characteristics but with high inertia masses, such as exhaust fan drives.
- Mechanisms with heavy starting conditions (ball and mining mills) that require the ability to start under load. Conventional soft starters do not meet the requirements of the starting mode. However, using full-featured frequency converters solely for starting is excessive and economically unjustified. The use of PCHPS makes it possible to meet all starting requirements for such mechanisms.
